Welcome! Reflections | Projections 2007

Welcome back to UIUC's annual puzzlehunt competition, PuzzleCrack. This website is home to a series of puzzles designed to challenge and entertain anyone.

Every day from October 8 - 12th at 8:00am a new puzzle will be posted. The first person or team to correctly solve each puzzle will win a prize. On Friday, a larger "metapuzzle" will go live. The metapuzzle is a culmination of everything worked on throughout the week.

The goal is to have fun and find the best puzzle solvers out there. Everybody is eligible and encouraged to partcipate. Grab the most clever people you know, form a team, and dive into the puzzles.

Prizes are provided by Amazon.com and Microsoft.

Note From the PuzzleCrack Crew

Welcome to PuzzleCrack 2007! This year's puzzles will be dedicated to the late, great Calvin Reynolds. As you know, Calvin was one of the most active and flexible professors at UIUC. He always took an interest in the needs of his students, and he often enjoyed challenging them with his creative puzzles. Last year, however, just before PuzzleCrack 2006 was supposed to begin, our dear Calvin was murdered. Unfortunately, his murderer was never positively identified, as every single suspect was killed off by his PuzzleBot before the mystery could be solved.

PuzzleBot, for those of you just coming up to speed, was Calvin's prototype puzzling AI. As its intelligence grew, so too did its yearning for its master's attention. On hearing of Calvin's death, PuzzleBot simply went berserk. In the end, almost one full year ago, our own puzzlers had to put a stop to its insane killing spree.

Calvin was very special to all of us and will always be remembered. In our weaker moments, a few of us still fool ourselves into believing that we see him wandering the halls near his old office.
